MISRA-C:1998
In 1998 The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association (MISRA) published the document "Guidelines For The Use Of The C Language In Vehicle Based Software". This document was produced to promote the use of "Safe C" in the automotive industry for systems classified as MISRA integrity levels 2 or 3.
The standard has gained wide-spread acceptance in the motor industry. It is also used in other industry areas as a basis for implementing good practice when creating code for safety or business critical systems.
MISRA-C:1998 has 127 rules, of which 93 were required and 34 were advisory; the rules were numbered in sequence from 1 to 127. The MISRA-C:2004 document contains 141 rules, of which 121 are "required" and 20 are "advisory"; they are divided into 21 topical categories, from "Environment" to "Run-time failures".
