Using Tracealyzer with Cypress PSoC devices
In collaboration with Cypress Semiconductors, Percepio Tracealyzer® now supports Cypress PSoC® MCUs, including the hardware profiler unit in the new PSoC® 6 family.
Percepio Application Note PA-019 describes in detail how to get started with Tracealyzer on Cypress PSoC® MCUs and Cypress PSoC Creator. The example is for PSoC 6, Cypress’ most recent MCU family, but except for the PSoC 6-specific hardware profiler it is applicable also for PSoC 4 or PSoC 5 devices.
In this example, we leverage the PSoC 6-specific hardware profile unit, the “Energy Profiler”, which can monitor the level of activity for 27 hardware functions, including Bluetooth (BLE) radio, flash memory and DMA channels, shown together with FreeRTOS software behavior. The video shows what that looks like in Tracealyzer 4, with our new live visualization.
In the video, Tracealyzer shows periodic samples of performance counters in the PSoC 6 “Energy Profiler” unit, which shows the level of activity for various hardware functions. This can be used for system-level debugging as well as optimization of performance and energy consumption. Note that the video calls this “energy usage” at some point, but that is somewhat of a simplification. Also note that the video is a few weeks old, so the user interface was not yet fully polished. Looks much better now!
Cypress hosts a demo of Tracealyzer 4 with Cypress PSoC 6 in their stand at Embedded World 2018 (Hall 4A, Stand #148), in Nuremberg, Germany, Feb 27 – Mar 1.
