Building Secure Software Webinar on April 21, 2010
In August 2003 a rolling blackout affected 10 million people in the Canadian province of Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states, raising concern that a cyber-attack by a hostile force was underway. Although the causes of the blackout were traced to a slew of system, procedural and human errors not an act of aggression, the event brought home the potential vulnerability risks to critical infrastructures in becoming dependent on internet communication for control and monitoring, helping to raise awareness of the need for secure system components that are immune to cyber attack. With increasing connectivity and dependence on the internet, there is a growing need to build security into software to protect against not only currently known vulnerabilities, but future vulnerabilities as well. This webinar will look specifically at the best practices, knowledge and tools available for building secure software that is free from vulnerabilities. Addressing known vulnerabilities first, the webinar will examine how static software analysis can be used to reinforce the use of secure coding practices and identify potential software weaknesses as identified by two community developed repositories; the CERT-C secure coding standard and the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) dictionary. The use of static analysis can yield significant gains in software security, but is best deployed via a rigorous and mature development process that has a security focus, and the webinar will further discuss the aspects of system definition, requirements capture, software development and test that must be considered while building secure software, including an overview of how the LDRA tool suite® can be brought to bear to reinforce secure development practices throughout the development process. LDRA’s webinar will illustrate how you can achieve: • Software engineers and engineering managers interested in learning about developing and certifying security-critical software. • Systems engineers interested in learning about the interface between systems & software in a security-critical environment.
